GAMU, Isabela, April 19 (PIA) – The Department of Education (DepEd) and the Department of Agriculture (DA) have joined together in promoting and showcasing the different techniques in vegetable, root crops and livestock production aimed at helping farmers to increase their yield.
The activity was conducted last Tuesday and Wednesday this week at Gamu Rural School where participants were taught how to produce and grow vegetables and livestock animals.
Dubbed as campus agri-fiesta, the campus activity was conducted to promote various methods of growing vegetables, root crops and livestocks are showcased for the public to emulate in a practical and simple way on how agri-products are produced.
Teachers and agricultural workers who came from the different localities in the province and from nearby provinces flocked at Gamu Rural School and witnessed and seen the practical way in producing vegetables and livestock using recyclable materials like used sacks, plastic materials and other recyclable materials.
Inside the school campus, vertical gardening, vertical and horizontal vegetable gardening using used plastic containers were showcased.
Vertical gardening is the use of multi-layered plastic containers that are planted with vegetables while horizontal gardening is the use of a spacious piece of land planted with vegetables and rootcrops.
Edgar Querubin, Gamu Rural School teacher, said the DepEd and the DA have joined hands in vegetable gardening aimed at helping the government reduced the number of malnourished school children in the country.
DA 2 director for special projects Rudy Santos said the DA provides vegetable seedlings to schools that are planted and once bore fruits, these are cooked and given to identified malnourished children.
Other activities during the event included proper handling in livestock production are also showcased during the two-day agri-fiesta which lasted last Wednesday.
