TUGUEGARAO CITY, April 17 (PIA) – The Department of Agriculture – Livestock Division of Region 2 is set to showcase native animals in a ‘Livestock and Poultry Expo” on April 22-25, 2013 at the Cagayan State University, Andrews Campus, here.

Dr. Geronima Ludan, chief of livestock division, said the activity aims to let farmers, specially animal raisers, be educated on the proper way of backyard animal farming and let them know of the benefits of investing into native animal productions in support to organic farming.

Ludan said the expo include exhibit of resource of animal production such as carabao, cattle, goats, native chicken, as well as others that are now raised by some farmers in the region.

“This would be a venue for the interested raisers to be educated on how to boost their productions and to invest in other by-products out of their raised animals such as dairy and skin processing as additional livelihood,” Ludan stated.

She also stated that several lectures on the updates and results of some researches in relation to animal production will also be taken up during the four-day activity.

There will also be an exhibit on the processed meats and milk as well as other products of some animal raisers in the region to encourage further other farmers to go on animal raising as potential livelihood in the region.

“Although we advocate for native animal production now, it does not mean that we discourage the farmers to go on hybrid production. We just want to inculcate to them that native animal, aside from its benefits to the health because it is organic, we also need to revive the decreasing production of native animal products as well as our support to organic farming in the region,” Ludan said.

Ludan also informed that interested investors and small farmers can seek technical assistance from the veterinary doctors of the agriculture department or from the veterinarian in their respective municipalities.
