TUGUEGARAO CITY, April 17 (PIA) – Due to high demand in the market, the Department of Agriculture in Region 2 now ventures in artificial insemination to boost goat production in the region.
Dr. Geronima Ludan, chief-livestock division, said there is a high demand of goat meat in the region but there are only few goat raisers that is why they are introducing new technology on how to enhance productions and encourage more investors on goat raising.
Ludan said aside from the high demand of goat meat in the market, they discovered that goat skin can also be processed into bags and other leather crafts which can be a potential additional livelihood of the raisers.
“We have high demand of goat meat but we have low supply that is why we now introduce artificial insemination as well as extend technical assistance to the interested raisers to ensure quality and boost further their productions,” Ludan said.
She explained that they also extended not only technical assistance but they piloted their loan program to some interested and qualified goat raisers to 20 towns in the region. She said they gave initial heads of goats to those who have 1,000 hectares of grassland with constructed fence and house of the animal.
“We give the initial number of female goats and one buck to them and do the artificial insemination to let them realize its benefits. We constantly extend technical assistance as we do visitation to the areas to ensure the quality of the production,” Ludan added.
